TWJWD
What Would Jesus Do? We've heard it; probably said it... But I was recently reminded what WWJD is really all about from my 9 year old son! It's baseball season. Night after night we're at the fields practicing and playing, sweating then freezing, in the sun and under the lights- it's baseball in Nevada! Most of you know that at the end of a game (no matter the sport) comes the players' favorite part- SNACK!!! The other night I got home late from worship practice and found an opened mini bag of Fritos on our counter. After asking, the husband told me they were Cade's leftover snack from baseball- he'd only eaten a couple. I sealed up the bag and put them in the pantry for a later snack, as Cade was tucked in bed at the time. The next afternoon I was craving salt- and found the Fritos. As I was munching on them, Cade walked in. With a guilty grin I apologized for eating some of his baseball snack and asked if I could have some of them. He smiled and said I could have them all, "I don't really like Fritos." In the middle of my next handful, I stopped and looked at Cade who was now curled up on the couch with me watching Rachel Ray. "Isn't this your baseball snack from last night?" I asked. "Yeah," he answered, watching Rachel make chicken and pasta. I couldn't let it go. "Did you choose Fritos even though you don't like them, or was it all that was being passed around?" Withouth skipping a beat or looking away from Rachel- he loves to cook, by the way- he said, "No, they had Doritos, too." Now maybe when he's older and understands women a little bit better (because, of course, I will teach him what he needs to know!!!), he'll realize that this is NOT enough details!!! SO, I asked him, "Why did you choose Fritos if you don't even like them?" He turned to look at me and tells me that another player on his team wanted Doritos but there weren't any left so he traded with him so his teammate could have Doritos. Not being able to let it rest, I simply asked him why? He looked me straight in the eyes and with the sweetest voice that brought tears to my eyes he said quite mater-of-factly, "That's What Jesus Would Do, isn't it, Mom?" I hugged him, smiled, and said, "Yes, Cade. That's exactly what Jesus would do." Then we went back to watching Rachel Ray's big finish, while I'm left pondering the simplicity yet profoundness of my 9 year old's simple act of trading Doritos for Fritos.
